Moab, Utah 2025 Volunteer Vacation<\/p>\n\n\n

Surrounded by Moab\u2019s towering red sandstone walls, an American Hiking Society crew came together to care for one of the Southwest\u2019s most iconic desert landscapes. Partnering with the Bureau of Land Management\u2019s Moab Field Office, volunteers focused their efforts on the Grandstaff Trail\u2014one of the most popular and heavily trafficked trails in Moab. Their work included rerouting eroded sections, removing fallen trees, covering social trails, and building stone steps to make the path safer and more sustainable for future visitors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Midway through the week, a federal government shutdown brought field operations to a halt, cutting their trail work short. Though disappointed, the crew\u2019s reaction spoke volumes\u2014their eagerness to keep working was a true testament to their dedication and passion for stewardship. Rather than pack up early, they chose to stay and make the most of their time in the desert.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Together, they made the most of their time in Moab\u2014hiking through canyons at sunset, tackling classic slickrock mountain bike routes, floating down the Colorado River surrounded by red rock walls, and taking day trips up into the La Sal Mountains to see the brilliant fall colors. Even without trail tools in hand, the crew continued to connect with the landscape and each other, appreciating the chance to experience the very places they came to care for.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What could have been a setback instead became a reminder of why they volunteer in the first place: for the camaraderie, the shared love of wild places, and the joy of giving back to landscapes as breathtaking as Moab.<\/p>\n\n\n
