On the rugged and beautiful Gull Rock Trail, a group of American Hiking Society volunteers spent a week there with the goal to replace a rotted 130-foot boardwalk and keep this popular trail safe and accessible. Each day brought steady progress as the crew worked together to dismantle the old structure and build a new one using lumber that had been hauled in the winter before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The labor was tough at times, but the rewards were clear. One participant reflected, \u201cI loved the time with my 17 year old. The teamwork and problem solving around weather, food, work, etc. was really great. The camp was spectacular and it was so amazing to spend the week there.\u201d Trips like this show how Volunteer Vacations can be more than trail work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are a chance for families to spend meaningful time together, strengthening bonds and creating memories in the outdoors while giving back to the places they explore. On breaks, the group explored the historic gold rush town of Hope and took on smaller hikes in the surrounding area. Hope is a small but vibrant community tucked along the Turnagain Arm, known for its rich history, scenic views, and welcoming spirit. For many volunteers, it was their first time visiting this corner of Alaska.
