Volunteers hiked deep into Wyoming\u2019s Shoshone National Forest to spend a week working on the rugged Deer Creek Trail. Surrounded by the peaks and wild valleys of the Washakie Wilderness\u2014the most remote wilderness in the lower 48\u2014this crew experienced the true beauty of backcountry living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group set up camp about ten miles from the trailhead, carrying in everything they needed for the week. Days were spent hiking out to the worksite, where volunteers widened tread, built log retaining walls, and cut drains into the steep, narrow sections of trail. The work was demanding, but the results were easy to see: safer, more stable paths for future hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evenings were quieter, with time to read, sit by the campfire, or play games under the stars. One volunteer reflected on their favorite part of the trip being \u201cThe amazing group of people and the challenging project\u2014I was awed by what we were able to accomplish!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volunteer Vacations are designed for everyone, no matter ability level or previous experience, these trips offer opportunity to take part in stewardship and give back to public lands. While this trip was more strenuous and took place in the backcountry, it created a safe space for volunteers to step outside of their comfort zones and challenge themselves in meaningful ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One participant reflected: \u201cI came into this trip with limited backpacking experience, and it had been over a decade since I had done anything close to trail work. Even though I was the slowest\/smallest\/\u2018weakest\u2019 person in the group, I never felt judged or pressured to do more than I was capable of. This project challenged me in the best ways, and I\u2019ve come away with a much better appreciation for what goes into maintaining our nation\u2019s trail systems. I feel more capable, and more connected, because of this trip.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the week, the crew left behind both lasting improvements to the Deer Creek Trail and a sense of pride in what they accomplished together. Hard work, beautiful wilderness, and a supportive community made this Volunteer Vacation one to remember.<\/p>\n\n\n
