Tucked into the quiet high plains of northern New Mexico, Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge became the backdrop for a week of hands-on trail restoration and new connections. A small but dedicated crew came together to help reopen the Cottonwood Trail and Day Use Area \u2014 a space that had long been overgrown and underused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work involved trimming dead elm branches, mowing and raking the trail, and preparing it for resurfacing with gravel. Equipment challenges meant plans shifted along the way, but the crew adapted quickly. \u201cWhile we didn’t finish all of the work we had planned due to some challenges with equipment, we left the picnic area in much better shape than when we arrived,\u201d one volunteer shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between projects, the group explored the surrounding area \u2014 including a visit to Capulin Volcano and a local lake. Wildlife sightings, especially pronghorn antelope, were a daily highlight. \u201cMaxwell National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful place with sweeping views of the landscape,\u201d one participant said. \u201cThe crew was small but everyone pitched in to get the work done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with the scenery and the service, what stood out most was the camaraderie. \u201cI made some new friends while on the trip and got to visit an area of the state of New Mexico that I had not been to yet. I also look forward to catching up with them over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when federal land agencies are facing staffing shortages and budget cuts, this trip was more than just a volunteer project \u2014 it was a timely response to a real need. These volunteers didn\u2019t just show up for a week of trail work; they answered a broader call to care for the places that belong to all of us. Their efforts helped reopen public spaces for community use and proved that when support is needed, people are willing to step up ready to make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
