{"id":53468,"date":"2025-07-21T17:35:50","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T21:35:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/?p=53468"},"modified":"2025-07-21T17:36:45","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T21:36:45","slug":"big-south-fork-volunteer-vacation-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/big-south-fork-volunteer-vacation-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Building a Stronger Trail at Big South Fork"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Deep in the heart of Tennessee\u2019s Cumberland Plateau, a group of volunteers gathered this spring to help care for one of Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area\u2019s most iconic destinations: the Twin Arches trail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known for dramatic sandstone bluffs, sweeping views, and some of the tallest natural arches east of the Mississippi, this trail draws thousands of visitors each year \u2014 but heavy use and steep terrain take a toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:63% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"934\" src=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/pix-big-south-fork-volvaca6-602025-800x934.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53469 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/pix-big-south-fork-volvaca6-602025-800x934.jpg 800w, https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/pix-big-south-fork-volvaca6-602025-550x642.jpg 550w, https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/pix-big-south-fork-volvaca6-602025.jpg 994w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Throughout the week, volunteers worked hard to improve the trail\u2019s sustainability and protect the landscape. Using hand tools, they repaired eroded tread, cleared overgrown vegetation, built water bars for drainage, and helped maintain ladders and boardwalks that allow hikers to safely traverse steep sections. A crew member summed up the experience: <em>\u201cRenovating a steep section of the most popular trail at Big South Fork felt especially rewarding \u2014 knowing we were making it safer and more durable for everyone who follows.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Days began with a hike into the work site \u2014 sometimes up to two miles over steep, rocky paths \u2014 but the volunteers were undeterred. The stunning views from the Twin Arches and the sense of shared purpose fueled their efforts. In their free time, they explored additional trails throughout the park, taking in the wild beauty of this 125,000-acre landscape where river gorges, wildlife, and historic sites come together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 62%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>What made this trip stand out was not only the work but the atmosphere of the park and the partnership with its staff. One participant shared, <em>\u201cBig South Fork is the best Volunteer Vacation I\u2019ve been on. They have great facilities, all the tools you need, and even the park superintendent came out to visit us.
