But in October 2022, the Bovee Fire burned nearly 5,000 acres here, destroying the historic Scott Lookout Trail and surrounding habitat. With federal funding cuts and over 5,700 land management staff lost in recent years, restoring these places has become more challenging than ever\u2014and more dependent on the dedication of volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This group of seven stepped up to meet that need. Over the course of the week, the crew helped <strong>re-sign and re-mulch the Scott Lookout Trail<\/strong> to make it accessible again. But the most impactful task? Planting seedlings in areas scorched by the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img-6787-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53397\" style=\"width:827px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img-6787-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img-6787-550x413.jpg 550w, https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img-6787-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img-6787-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/img-6787-1920x1440.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlanting seedlings in an area with such visible destruction was extremely meaningful,\u201d one crew member reflected. \u201cEven if only 50% survive\u2014which is what we were told by forest staff\u2014we still, in my opinion, made a difference. Plus, the greenhouse production and seed generation process was AMAZING to see!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the trail work, volunteers connected deeply with each other. One person shared that their favorite part of the experience was simply \u201cmeeting new people,\u201d while others spoke about the joy of bonding during free time\u2014whether hanging out at camp or taking a side trip to <strong>Smith Falls<\/strong>, Nebraska\u2019s tallest waterfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rebuilding What Was Lost: Stewarding Nebraska\u2019s Sandhills\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XEXj6yYhZ0k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This project was part of American Hiking Society\u2019s response to the urgent call for stewardship. With reduced staff and growing maintenance backlogs across federally managed lands, volunteers are stepping in to protect trails and access for everyone.
