Over spring break in late March, a group of students from Keuka College in New York traveled to Hungry Mother State Park in Virginia as part of their institution\u2019s Alternative Break program.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n

One student joined after a life-changing experience at an alternative break the year prior, sharing, \u201cI wanted to be able to participate again to learn more about the communities around me and provide help where needed.\u201d With deep appreciation for public lands and those who care for them, the trip offered a meaningful chance to give back and connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the week, students worked closely with park staff on trail maintenance and conservation projects while forming strong bonds with one another and the land. \u201cBeing in community with our team and the great staff at Hungry Mother State Park\u201d stood out as a highlight for one participant. \u201cBy far my favorite part of the week was seeing the passion that our site supervisors had for the work that they do and the park that they manage,\u201d one participant reflected. Park staff left a lasting impression on the group, helping them feel welcomed and motivated. From learning about native wildlife like the endangered Hellbender salamander to tackling invasive threats like the Hemlock woolly adelgid, students walked away with new knowledge and perspectives. \u201cStereotypes were challenged, and our team made new friendships and connections,\u201d one shared.<\/p>\n\n\n

The group\u2019s efforts led to tangible results: they cleared trail corridor, shaved berms, and installed nicks along 6 miles of the Lake Loop Trail\u2014leaving a lasting impact on trail access and sustainability at the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid the hard work, there was also room for laughter and time to enjoy the area. One participant said, \u201cThis location is one to return to and one to check out, if you have not been. The trails and the park are breathtaking. It’s a wonderful place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AHS also offers Volunteer Vacations<\/a>, which is a great way for individuals of all ages to combine their passion for travel with meaningful service work. These trips provide a unique opportunity to make a positive impact while exploring new destinations and cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
