This February over 120 advocates, including American Hiking Society\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/advocacy\/#nextgen\">NextGen Trail Leaders<\/a>, hikers, and leaders of trail organizations from as far as Alaska and Hawaii converged on Washington, DC to make your needs as hikers heard heard. In meetings with Senators, Representatives, and top agency officials, advocates called for the protection of public lands through the full funding of trails, the permanent reauthorization of the <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/advocacy\/take-action\/\">Land and Water Conservation Fund<\/a> (LWCF), and passage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2019\/02\/12\/senate-just-passed-decades-biggest-public-lands-package-heres-whats-it\/?utm_term=.4ffe557581a5\">Senate Public Lands Package<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NextGen Trail Leaders led the charge and brought along thousands of social media followers from across the country to join their advocacy efforts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bty5uF_FFyX\/\">Trail Leader Karen Ramos met with her representative Salud Carbajal<\/a> (D-CA-24) to share her work with an indigenous-migrant community on the central coast and invite the representative to join American Hiking for a <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/national-trails-day\/\">National Trails Day<\/a>\u00ae event. Furthering the meeting\u2019s success, Rep. Carbajal joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/advocacy\/house-trails-caucus\/\">House Trails Caucus<\/a> on the spot. Trail Leader Kaci Stringer welcomed her newly-elected representative, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/WTrimble_190212_5178-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\">Steve Watkins (R-KS-2), to Congress and secured a commitment from his office to support the Senate-passed public lands package, including LWCF, when brought up for a vote in the House. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/WTrimble_190212_5224-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\">Hike the Hill\u00ae was brought to an energizing conclusion with a party hosted at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/\">REI\u2019s<\/a> DC flagship store to celebrate the work of trail organizations and our federal agency partners, make new connections, and encourage collaboration with the broader recreation community. U.S. Forest Service Chief Vicki Christiansen, and other agency leaders joined us and brought a renewed commitment to our trail systems. Topping off the night was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AmericanHiking\/photos\/a.10152197098568108\/10156197522613108\/?type=3&amp;theater\">passage in the Senate<\/a> of the bipartisan public lands package, which includes: permanent reauthorization of the LWCF; the Every Kid Outdoors Act, ensuring free access to public lands for all fourth graders and their families; and improved access to the North Country and Lewis and Clark National Scenic and Historic Trails.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/WTrimble_190212_5194-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"246\"><\/p>\n<p>The work isn\u2019t over!
