Fuller State Park&#8230; I was shocked to find out that I was standing in the first state park east of the mighty Mississippi to be open to African Americans. The day was full of sweat, wonder, and education as we came across armadillo tracks, a snake sunbathing, and an excavated native site &#8211; Chucalissa Indian Village. Leave No Trace, people!&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/advocacy\/introducing-nextgen-leaders\/\">Dakota Jackson, MA<\/a><\/p>\r\n<h3>Advocating for Trail Funding<\/h3>\r\n<p>In an effort to further incorporate public participation in advocacy around trails issues, American Hiking Society offered National Trails Day\u00ae participants the opportunity to send their Member of Congress a postcard showing their love of trails and asking for their support of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). The LWCF is an essential program that provides funding to build and expand trails and has helped protect America\u2019s most treasured places. Over the past five decades, it has touched every state, conserving trails, National Parks, Forests, Wildlife Refuges, and state and local parks.*<\/p>\r\n<p>American Hiking Society distributed over 1,000 postcards to events across the country and collected participant responses. Everyone had great input, from picking up trash, teaching our youth to love our trails, donating to organizations that care for our lands, practicing Leave No Trace\u00a0principles, volunteering with your local park, doing trail maintenance, but most importantly &#8211; education. But we want to establish some connector trails that can help us get to these wonderful public land trails from our small rural community, so this year we highlighted the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail which we hope someday will be a dedicated trail through Anza.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>-Allison Renck, CA<\/p>\r\n<h2>National Trails Day\u00ae Champions<\/h2>\r\n<h6>Saara Snow, Adventure Cycling Association<\/h6>\r\n<p>American Hiking Society recognizes the commitment of all the organizations involved in building National Trails Day\u00ae into an outstanding day of fun and service. Each year, we honor a few organizations that go above\u00a0and beyond in planning and promoting events. The National Trails Day\u00ae Champions for 2018 include:<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctwoodlands.org\/ct-trails-weekend\"><strong>Connecticut Forest &amp; Park Association<\/strong> (CFPA)<\/a>: For the last 10 years, Connecticut has hosted more NTD events than any other state, thanks to the leadership and coordination of CFPA, an AHS Alliance Organization. In 2018, Connecticut hosted a total of 256 events.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventurecycling.org\/resources\/bike-travel-weekend\/\"><strong>Adventure Cycling Association<\/strong> (ACA)<\/a>: For the third year, ACA\u2019s Bike Travel Weekend coincided with NTD, and more than 180 bike trips took place on trails this year.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/events\">REI<\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong>More than half of all the REI stores partnered with local organizations to host outstanding events. The majority of REI stores focused on trail improvement projects.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hikeitbaby.com\/\"><strong>Hike it Baby<\/strong><\/a>: More than 60 Hike it Baby branches invited families to get outside and join them for a family-friendly hike on National Trails Day\u00ae.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.gov\/dep\/greenacres\/trails\/index.html\"><strong>New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection<\/strong> (NJDEP)<\/a>: NJDEP coordinated more than 50 events throughout New Jersey to celebrate NTD. Events ranged from trail maintenance projects\u00a0to guided hikes, and community festivals.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gastateparks.org\/\">Georgia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mostateparks.com\/\">Missouri<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tnstateparks.com\/\">Tennessee<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcr.virginia.gov\/state-parks\/\">Virginia<\/a> State Parks:<\/strong> These four states organized events at nearly all of their state parks.
