In addition to the inclusions listed above, the registration fee helps offset the costs associated with coordinating the logistics and marketing of more than 50 different projects in 30 states every year. The Volunteer Vacation registration fee only covers a portion of the actual costs to run this nationwide program, including the hours of staff time to organize and plan trips, recruit hosts, train crew leaders, and ensure that volunteers have a memorable experience. Age ranges from 15 to 80. Volunteers under the age of 18 are welcome on certain trips if accompanied by a legal guardian. Each trip lists the minimum age allowed on the project details page. While each trip usually has a couple or two, or friends traveling together, many participants travel alone. If you have never done trail maintenance before, we welcome you! While we do ask that volunteers are in good physical condition, prior trail maintenance experience is not necessary on any of our trips. There is a wide variety of tasks on each trip and there is always something for everyone to do. (We do strongly recommend prior backpacking experience for trips designated with backpacking to a remote location.) While trips do not require prior trail maintenance experience, all of our projects require participants to be in good physical condition and will involve 6-8 hours of physical labor a day. Projects are rated from &#8216;easy&#8217; to &#8216;very strenuous&#8217;. \u00a0Please read the project descriptions carefully, honestly assess your physical capabilities, and choose one that fits your experience level and current health. Weekend trips allow you to make a difference on the trails you love over a condensed yet impactful period.<\/p>\n<p>Considerations when deciding the length of trip to join may include your physical capabilities, experience level, current health, travel timeframe and availability, and project rating.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-5\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-5\"><h4>Travel<\/h4><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-5\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The start date listed for each project is the travel\/meeting date. \u00a0The meeting time will generally be in the late afternoon of the start date\u00a0to allow morning and early afternoon travel. \u00a0The project work will begin the following day. \u00a0For backpacking trips, the crew will generally camp at the trailhead or other temporary accommodations for the first night, and then hike into basecamp the following morning. \u00a0The end date listed for each project is used as a camp cleanup\/travel day. \u00a0Generally, no work will be done on this date.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers are responsible for all travel costs to and from the site. Many hosts offer an airport pickup. When we confirm the project, we will provide you with the travel instructions including airport pickup and departure times and the designated meeting place. Do not make\u00a0non-refundable travel arrangements until you have received a project confirmation. If the project is canceled due to low attendance or unforeseen circumstances, American Hiking cannot be held responsible for loss of funds due to canceled or changed travel itineraries.<\/p>\n<p>If the host cannot provide an airport pickup, it is the responsibility of the volunteer to get to the site. We provide a list of participants in the confirmation email and you might coordinate with some of your fellow crew members to carpool. Airport shuttles, renting a car, or driving your personal vehicle are all options if the host cannot provide an airport pickup.<\/p>\n<p>*Travel expenses for public service projects may be tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-6\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-6\"><h4>Food<\/h4><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-6\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Food is included in your registration fee for all Volunteer Vacations. \u00a0The American Hiking crew leader or project host will coordinate the menu for the week based on the dietary restrictions\/preferences you list on your registration forms. If possible, the crew leader will shop in advance of the trip for groceries.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dietary Restrictions\/Needs:<\/strong>\u00a0We will try to accommodate dietary restrictions and needs\u00a0within reason. \u00a0Please be sure to list any dietary restrictions on your registration form and reiterate them to the crew leader. If your needs are extensive or expensive, you may be asked to bring some of your own food. We ask that all volunteers be flexible.\u00a0<strong id=\"noexperience\"><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Group Meals and Chores:<\/strong>\u00a0Food preparation, meal clean-up, and other camp chores (firewood collection, cleaning tools, etc.) are split between\u00a0the crew. The crew leader or host will delegate these duties to the crew upon arrival. ALL volunteers are expected to pitch into the efforts on the trail, as well as at camp.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meals outside of the scheduled menu:<\/strong>\u00a0Volunteers cover the cost of meals eaten out or any personal additions that were not planned by the crew leader or host.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><h4>Accommodations<\/h4><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Accommodations will be arranged in advance at either an indoor cabin or dormitory, car camping\u00a0front country campsite, or a backcountry primitive location. Campsites range from developed campgrounds with bathroom\/shower facilities to primitive backcountry sites. Volunteers are required to bring their own tent, sleeping bag, and pad for trips that involve camping. Projects that provide indoor accommodations usually will require volunteers to bring their own sleeping bag. \u00a0Each project description includes a description of the accommodations provided and what gear is required for the participant.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\"><h4>Day in the Life of a Volunteer Vacation<\/h4><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Each Volunteer Vacation&#8217;s itinerary will vary\u00a0based on location, weather, project rating, and crew participants. \u00a0Typically, you&#8217;ll enjoy a hearty breakfast at camp and be on the trail between 8 AM and 9 AM.\u00a0Crews will generally work 6-8 hours each working day. \u00a0Everyone will pack their lunches to eat on the trail (you can expect a to be surrounded by beautiful scenery and the sounds of nature as you enjoy your sandwich!) Plenty of other breaks will be included.<\/p>\n<p>Most projects will wrap up the work day in the late afternoon, to hike back to camp and enjoy a few hours of daylight for free recreation. While trips do not require prior trail maintenance experience, all of our projects require participants to be in good physical condition and will involve 6-8 hours of physical labor per day during trip. Although trail maintenance is often best explained with a hands-on approach,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Introduction-Trail-Maintenance.pdf\">Trail Maintenance: 101<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0will clarify what your project could entail. The document contains a glossary of common trail maintenance terms, commonly used tools, and tool safety information. More in-depth information and training will be provided on your Volunteer Vacation prior to starting work.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tWhat to Bring\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>Your equipment needs will vary based on the project and different climates. Pay attention to any special instructions from your host and crew leader for your specific project. Each volunteer should bring the following gear in addition to all personal items. Break in shoes or boots by walking and hiking in them prior to the trip. Dress in layers, bring a hat, avoid cotton as it retains moisture, and wear tall socks for protection. If carrying a pack, select a pack that feels comfortable for you and that won&#8217;t put excess strain on your back and shoulders. Insects and UV rays are likely to be present so ensure you are applying SPF and bug repellent.
